Romantic getaways in Greater Kruger

The Greater Kruger is the safari of dreams: private reserves that share unfenced boundaries with Kruger National Park, where animals move freely and lodges can offer the kind of game viewing most people only see on television.

Reserves such as the Sabi Sand, Timbavati and Klaserie, and those around Hoedspruit, allow off-road driving and night drives, which you cannot do in the national park itself. That means closer sightings of leopard, lion and elephant, with only a few vehicles at each sighting.

The lodges range widely. Tented camps feel close to the bush and are often better value; the most celebrated lodges offer private plunge pools, spa treatments and exceptional food. Whichever you choose, ask about star beds, sleep-outs and private dinners, which are often what couples remember most.

Most visitors fly into Hoedspruit, Skukuza or Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport near Nelspruit, or drive from Johannesburg in around five to six hours. Three nights is ideal.
