There is something about sinking into hot water with someone you love while the sky turns pink and the first stars appear. These are the South African stays we would book for exactly that: places where the hot tub is yours alone, set somewhere worth looking at.

Most of the hot tub getaways we list are in the Western Cape, and that is no accident. Cape winters are cold and wet, which is the perfect excuse to light a wood-fired tub on a mountain deck in the Cederberg, on a fynbos hillside in the Overberg or above the vineyards in Tulbagh and Franschhoek. In summer the same tubs come into their own after dark, when the heat of the day has gone and the night is clear.

You will find two kinds of tub here. Wood-fired tubs are the romantic ones: you stoke the fire, wait, and the anticipation is part of the fun. Electric jacuzzis and heated plunge pools are ready whenever you are, which matters if you only have one night. If it is important to you, check which one you are getting before you book.

Further north, a handful of bush lodges have a private hot tub or heated plunge pool on the deck, so you can soak while you watch the waterhole. It is a very different kind of evening, with the sound of the bush instead of silence.
